After playing catching up game in the midsize sedan market, Kia successively redesigned the Optima up to its current highly competitive level. In 2012 it became the first Kia model to sell more than 150,000 units in the US and has maintained that level since. The new model comes with few changes as the automaker would rather keep it as it is rather tan mess up with it.
2016 Kia Optima Exterior and Interior
Kia over the last five years has kept the 2016 Kia Optima design largely the same except for minor tweaks here and there. For the 2016 model, there are a few subtle changes. At the front, the grille has been redesigned slightly. Its headlights have also been slightly modified and will be the first Kia model to feature Bi-Xenon HID headlights. The lower bumper has been redesigned and features larger air intakes and new vertical air vents have replaced fog lights. A small window has been added to the C-pillar. The rear features more changes. The new rear fascia includes a ducktail spoiler and new taillights similar to the ones on Hyundai Genesis. Its exterior dimensions are slightly larger than the outgoing model. It will be 0.4 inches longer due to a 0.4 inches increase in its wheelbase, 1.0 inches wider and 0.5 inches taller.
The cabin of the 2016 Kia Optima sedan will accommodate five people. Just like the outgoing model, Kia will equip the base model of the 2016 Kia Optima with handsome features as standard. The center stack has a clean design with fewer buttons and knobs. The cabin is designed with passenger comfort in mind. It features a stiffer seat frame, heated, ventilated and power-adjustable front seats. The front passenger seat is also height-adjustable which has been a preserve of premium sedans. Lower trim levels feature quality cloth upholstery while higher trims feature leather or Nappa leather upholstery. Tech’ wise the Optima features Kia’s UVO2 connectivity system along with an 8-inch touch-screen system integrated with iOS 8 and Android Lollipop. The 2016 Kia Optima also features a 6-speaker audio system as standard but there is an option for the Infinity Premium Audio System6 which features 24 speakers, a 360-watt amplifier and Clari-Fi technology. 2016 Kia Optima stiffer engine mounts, body panels and new wheels have led to reduction of engine noise, vibration and road noise leading to a quieter cabin.
2016 Kia Optima Engine
The 2016 Kia Optima will be offered in three engine choices. The base engine is a carryover 2.4 L naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder unit that produces 185 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine is EPA rated at 25 mpg in city and 37 mpg on highway drives. Its mileage dips to 24 mpg city and 35 mpg Highway when it is loaded with heavy option like a sunroof. 2016 Kia Optima the second engine is a 1.6 L turbocharged four which is fitted on the LX trim. The engine comes good with 178 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It is EPA rated at 28 mpg and 39 mpg on city and highway drives respectively. This engine is mated to an in-house designed dual-clutch 7 speed semi- automatic transmission system. The last engine is a 2.0 L turbocharged unit available in the SX and SXL trims. Compared to the last year’s engine, Kia has detuned the new engine to offer more fuel economy. 2016 Kia Optima the new engine will deliver 245 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque compared to the previous model’s 274 hp and 269 lb-ft f torque. 2016 Kia Optima the engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is EPA rated at 22mpg in the city and 32 mpg on highway, an improvement of 2 mpg and 1 mpg for city and highway drives compared to the previous version.
2016 Kia Optima Price and Release Date
The 2016 Kia Optima will be released to dealerships during this last quarter of 2015. The base LX trim has an MSRP of $ 21,840, $ 23,990 for the LX Turbo, $ 24,890 for the EX and $ 29,690 for the SX Turbo. The top trim SXL turbo goes for $ 35,790.
